Job Portsmouth and Ann Watkins were married at St Michael’s Church,
Basingstoke, on 11 December 1794.
A Hampshire marriage licence gave the information that Job Portsmouth,
a bachelor, was a farmer of Sherborne St John, and Ann Watkins,
aged 21, was a single lady of Basingstoke.
The marriage register was signed by the two witnesses Harriet Ilsley
and Henry Portsmouth.
From the IGI, baptisms in Sherborne St John for the children of Job and Ann Portsmouth were Henry (25 October 1795), Anne (26 December 1796), Edmund (29 April 1798), Job (18 May 1800), Patience (11 April 1802), Harriet (12 February 1804), Richard (28 April 1805), John (8 March 1807), James (16 April 1809) and Hester (10 May 1812). The two brothers Edmund Portsmouth and James Portsmouth became farmers in the Hampshire villages of Eastrop, a small parish adjoining Basingstoke, and Kingsclere, respectively. Edmund’s wife Mary was the daughter of William Whistler of Basingstoke. James’s grandson Charles Portsmouth married Kate, the daughter of John Whistler of Sherborne St John. The family connection between William Whistler and John Whistler is not known. Census returns, maintained by The National Archives, can be viewed at the Ancestry family history website. A Hampshire marriage licence dated 7 November 1821 was given for
Edmund Portsmouth of Eastrop, farmer, aged 21, bachelor, and Mary Whistler of
Basingstoke, aged 21, spinster; bondsman: Henry Portsmouth, mealman of
St Lawrence Reading, Berkshire. The marriage was recorded the next day
at St Michael’s Church, Basingstoke, in the presence of the two witnesses
Henry Portsmouth and Sarah Whistler, the younger sister of Mary.
On 17 November 1821 a marriage notice was printed in Jackson’s
Oxford Journal: ‘Married – at Basingstoke, Mr Edmund Portsmouth, of
Estrop [Eastrop] Farm, to Mary, second daughter of Mr W. Whistler of
Basingstoke’ (British Library 19th century newspapers online).
A survey of Eastrop for 1839 recorded that Edmund Portsmouth leased land from both William Apletree and Lord Bolton, a major landowner in the area (North Hampshire Tithe Map Project, website by Gerry Dutton).

The farmstead appears to be Merton Farm as
an 1865 Basingstoke directory named Henry Portsmouth as the farmer
at Merton Farm (Harrod & Co.’s Directory of Hampshire & Isle of Wight,
1865, accessed from Historical Directories online).
Merton Farm, with a farmhouse located on Church Street, was named in memory of Walter de Merton, a benefactor of Basingstoke in the 13th century. In the 1880s Merton Farm was relocated to land in Aldermaston Road, just outside the town (Robert Brown, "Remembering Walter de Merton", Basingstoke Gazette 4/5/06, reprinted at the webpage: Merton Rise).

The Portsmouth family lived next to Eliza’s parents Charles and
Eliza Moody of Weybrook Farm. The 1881 census reported Charles Moody,
aged 79, as a farmer of 380 acres.
It appears that Richard Portsmouth took over from his father-in-law
as the farmer of Weybrook Farm.
At the time of the 1881 census Richard’s son Charles Portsmouth was an 11-year-old school boy in residence at a boarding school in the town of Wallingford in Berkshire. The school, on Castle Street, accommodated eight boys between the ages of 9 and 15 as well as the School Master Ezekiel Meadows and his wife Louisa with their four young children (census reference: RG11/1294, folio 75, pp. 1–2).
